Essen University Medical Center takes another step towards the Smart Hospital

With the introduction of a live data platform from the Berlin-based company simplinic , Essen University Hospital is focusing on process control with live data at its Ruhrlandklinik and St. Josef Krankenhaus Werden sites in order to meet the increasing logistical and administrative challenges.

‍Driven
by demographic change and strong pressure on length of stay, the workload and the associated requirements for smooth processes in hospitals are constantly increasing. Instead of relieving the burden on staff, today's system landscape is associated with a lot of documentary, administrative and logistical work. Time that is lacking for the care and treatment of patients. Compared to other sectors, hospitals still have a lot of catching up to do when it comes to optimizing digital processes.

"Our smart hospital strategy requires a comprehensive reorientation, change and optimization in numerous areas. An innovative, future-proof IT structure with the associated software is essential for the well-being of our patients and for a modern working environment for our employees. In simplinic , we have found a partner who supports us in this process," says Thorsten Kaatze, Commercial Director of Essen University Hospital. "In addition to flawlessly functioning technology, we were impressed by the platform's open and modular approach. The ability to integrate third-party providers opens up Essen University Medicine to innovation and cooperation. By working with simplinic , we therefore have the opportunity to rethink hospital workflows in terms of processes and partnerships."

"We are delighted to have won Essen University Hospital, the nationwide pioneer of digitalization in hospitals, as a customer," says Steffen Geyer, Founder & Managing Director of simplinic GmbH. "The wheel doesn't always have to be reinvented. The biggest problem is that technologies and concepts that simplify many processes enormously in other industries have not yet been used in hospitals. We now want to tackle this together with Essen University Hospital."

The basis for simplinic is a live data platform that identifies the location and status of an object equipped with Bluetooth Low Energy technology in real time. The information is processed by algorithms and a recommendation for action is derived. This is then displayed on the smartphone in a simple and easy-to-understand manner to the people involved in the process. For example, cleaning service staff can be directed to the nearest station as required, or the central occupancy management system can be notified of vacant bed spaces in real time.

In addition to the great potential for process optimization, real-time localization offers full transparency about the location of resources. Similar to a car-sharing concept, it can be used to reduce the equipment fleet in the hospital and improve the utilization of equipment. Once the simplinic platform has been installed in the hospital, further processes can be analysed and supported by new modules. Other applications that can actively support patient flow, such as patient tracking, are currently being developed jointly.
